Best practices in climate leadership training and education

Climate Leadership is emerging as a topic and focus of a wide range of training and education programmes across Europe and internationally.

Best practices in climate leadership training and education

The REMARKABLE Climate Leaders investigated a range of programmes tackling the topics of climate, leadership and climate leadership with a suite of recommendations on how to structure the REMARKABLE Climate Leadership Programme (CLP).

The insights from the report shed light on best practices and approaches from programmes which are similar in nature and focus.

Climate Leadership Programmes

The programmes reviewed have been grouped into two categories:

  1. Training: These are shorter programmes that focus on specific topics or target groups. They may be delivered by educational or other organisations. Certification is not always a priority.
  2. Education: These are academic programmes that are offered at varying levels, ranging from single modules to Master’s programmes. They are typically delivered by educational institutions.

Public sector leadership

The REMARKABLE Climate Leaders partners provided valuable feedback, highlighting a need for more programmes in their regions that align with the ambitions and specific needs of building climate leadership. Additionally, it was noted that the majority of current leadership training/education in the climate space is geared towards the industry and business/corporate sector, indicating a great opportunity to develop more options for the public sector.

Interdisciplinary approach

Interdisciplinarity emerged as a particular theme across a number of programmes. Therefore, the CLP should aim to ensure a diverse mix of participants representing different sections within relevant organisations. A purely technical focus could neglect important aspects such as finance or social considerations.

REMARKABLE Climate Leaders will build new leadership capacity across Europe through a Climate Leadership Programme designed with and for climate leaders. Through a people-centred approach, Regional Energy Agencies will support leaders of public authorities and communities in implementing transformational roadmaps and innovative solutions to achieve climate neutrality.
